Ending First Quarter

imagesReally?!?!  It is almost the END of first quarter?  Wow – that went by QUICKLY!  As we round out the first part of our school year, we have tried out a few new things, hoping to make them more regular parts of our classroom in the coming months.  One of our new adventures was having a Skype session with another first grade classroom!  Please read below to learn and see more about the experience.  And . . . thanks for visiting our blog this week!

Conversation Starters:

  • unknownYour class heard a book read aloud by Mrs. Meihaus, the Robinson Librarian, named Carnivores.  What happened in this story?  What are some examples of what a carnivore might eat?
  • unknown-1During the Global Read Aloud this week, you heard another book that was written and illustrated by Lauren Castillo called The Troublemaker.  Who was the troublemaker in this story?  What did this character do to cause trouble?  Was the this who you thought the troublemaker was going to be when you did a sneak peek on the cover of the book?

Mystery Skype: Using technology is an AMAZING way to connect with the world and we did just that in our classroom this week.  After having the opportunity over the past few years to take part in a Skype session from Ecuador and watch a classroom Skype session in Mrs. Bearden’s classroom, we launched into hosting our own Skype session in our first grade classroom!  We had the opportunity to do a Mystery Skype with a first grade classroom from Kansas.  It was a “mystery” because we didn’t know where they were located and vice versa.  Since we didn’t know very much about maps, we had some learning to do – including where Missouri is located – and needed to develop questions to ask our new online buddies to find out where they lived.  Next, we needed to talk about possible jobs to have during our Skype session, prepare for the session and rehearse!  Finally, we made the call and it was AWESOME!  Check out our jobs below and a few photos below.  Also – check out the SPECIAL FEATURE section near the end of this post to see a few photos from one of our first grade photographers.

Celebrating Our Writing: We have worked hard on writing these past few weeks and it was time to CELEBRATE!  After a conversation as a class, we decided to invited Mrs. Marks first graders in to share our writing.  It was a wonderful chance to share our writing and a great way to celebrate our amazing authors.

Kids Teaching Kids: We continued into our second week of Kids Teach Kids and it continued to be a great learning opportunity for everyone – including me! 🙂  Check out a few photos below from our week of LEARNING from one another.

SPECIAL FEATURE: Kid Photography: During our Mystery Skype session this week, one of the jobs that our first grader’s chose from was photographer.  Check out a few photos below from one of our first grade photographers. (Sorry there aren’t more – there was a mix-up in iPads that inhibited photos getting to me!)

A Smile for You!  We have worked and worked and worked over the first quarter to notice and learn things about one another’s names.  As we did so, we created a sign for each first grader including our discoveries about their name and featured a photo.  We finished and now have all of our photos up on the door!  Check out our smiling first graders and it is sure to make you smile too!  Thanks for visiting our blog this week.  Have a great, LONG weekend!

We finished our door with photos and learning about each student's name in our class!
