Eek – it’s May Already!

Breakneck_speedWe are finishing the first week in May and the end of the school year is zooming closer and closer at breakneck speeds – eek!  Without further ado . . . read below to see what we’ve been doing this week in first grade as we wrap up our last (sniff, sniff!) few weeks together.

  • Conversation Starters
  • Writing – Getting Characters Out of TROUBLE & Using SPARKLE Words
  • Science – Cause and Effect in Nature
  • S.T.E.M. Day!
  • A Smile for You!

Conversation Starters:

  • UnknownAs you do each week, you visited Mrs. Meihaus in the library this week.  Tell me about the book she read to you, the puppet she shared and what you learned about snakes.
  • You started learning about economics this week and discussed needs and wants.  Tell me about some of your needs and wants.  As you listened to the book, If You Take a Mouse to School, what did you discover were the mouse’s needs and wants?

Writing – Getting Characters Out of TROUBLE & Using SPARKLE Words: This week, we focused our writing on ways to end our stories and using exciting words, which we called “sparkle” words. 🙂 It has been exciting to meet with our authors and see how creative they are when they truly “let go” and write about the character they created.  We discussed that oftentimes, writers end stories by having their character learn a lesson, use dialogue, take part in action or have strong feelings.  Your first grader has worked on incorporating this into his or her writing.  Additionally, we talked about adding “sparkle” words into our writing in order to keep our reader interested.  One day during our writing, it was AMAZING as the kids kept shouting out “sparkle” words they were using, instead of boring words that might put their reader to sleep!  Check out some of the words we are using on our list below.

Check out our list of SPARKLE words we are using in our writing! The smaller words on the chart are what we want to substitute with a "sparkle" word. Also, you can see a strategy we are using to spell words better by writing it three times, crossing out the one that doesn't look right and writing the one that looks best.

S.T.E.M. Day!: Last week on our half-day of school, we had the amazing opportunity to join a S.T.E.M. day orchestrated by the INCREDIBLE kindergarten teachers.  In a nutshell, S.T.E.M. is providing opportunities for children to explore and discover in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  If you’d like to learn more about S.T.E.M., click here.  Our day incorporated amazing experiences for our first graders from taking photographs of one another, building a bridge, exploring a REAL airplane, discovering a water table, creating designs with shapes, and more!  It was an amazing day and the children LOVED it!  Check out photos from our day below.

A Smile for You!  This week we had some fun with paint.  You will hear more about this work over the next few days.  I cannot share more because I have had STRICT orders from our first graders not to share anything else with you!  In the meantime, check out this photo and imagine the possibilities of what we could be working on in our room!  🙂 Thanks for visiting our blog this week.  Have a great weekend!
