45 Days of First Grade!

What does this Morning Message say?
What does this Morning Message say?

Today was officially the 45th day of first grade!  I remember when I wrote a post about it being the 17th day of school.  It seems like that was just yesterday!

As you see in the message on the right, we discussed the 45th day of school today during our Morning Message.  As a reminder, a first grader is our “helper” each morning and this person completes the  message in order to read it  to the class.  After reading the message, first graders ask questions (the questions are really corrections that they notice need to be made) to our helper.  This part of our day is a wonderful learning opportunity for our first grade writers and readers.   Can you figure out what this message said this week?  If you’re not sure, ask your first grader to help you! Thanks for visiting our SHORT blog this week – since we were off of school on Monday and Tuesday.

Conversation Starters:

  • IMG_1966You read a book about Veterans Day.  Your class talked about what a main idea is and agreed on a main idea for the book.  What did you decide was the main idea and why? (Families: You can see what we came up with in the photo on the right!)
  • IMG_1969You began talking about things you noticed about your classroom Word Wall and ways to use it.  What are some ideas you had about the Word Wall?  (Families: Again(!), you can see what we discussed in the photo on the right.)  How would you like to use it to become a better reader and writer?

Math: Double-Decker Bus: As a reminder, last week we started talking about  a new math investigation that began with a story about a girl watching double-decker buses and trying to count the number of passengers as the buses drove past her home.  We continued this discussion by exploring equivalent combinations of passengers on a bus.  With the help of the math rack, children could imagine a passenger going up or down between decks on the bus to find equivalent expressions of a number.  We began making posters to show the different ways to show a number and continued teaching one another our strategies for counting in equal groups.  Check out a few of our photos below.

A FEW Smiles for You! Since our post was slightly shorter than usual, I figured I’d share a few extra smiles with you from this week.  These kiddos are quite wonderful and I am rather fortunate to spend each day with them!  I hope these photos make you smile too.  Have a magnificent weekend! 🙂
