What have we been up to for three days? During the first weeks of school, the primary focus is on building community by guiding children to get to know one another and begin to feel safe and comfortable in a new school environment. We have definitely been working on that these first three days! As you read below, you will have the opportunity to “see” a few of the things we have been up to. First off, check out the “overview” of items in this week’s blog post (bolded below). Then, get ready to smile because we have some pretty great pictures of our kiddos below. Thanks for reading!
- Conversation Starters
- Class Picture
- Making a Tower
- A Smile for You!
- Where is your spot on the Rainbow Rug? Do you like your spot? Why or why not?
- Tell me names of three friends in your class. What have they done to make you feel cared for and for you to call them a friend?
- Today, you did a cup stacking challenge. What went well? What could you change to make better if you did it again?
Class Picture: We began the school year with a wonderful, smiling picture of 23 first graders. You probably saw this picture in your first grader’s backpack, but I wanted to share it here too. Hope you enjoy seeing this glimpse of our classroom!
Rainbow Rug: We began to get comfortable in one of our two whole-group gathering spots. One of these spots is on the Rainbow Rug (you can check out a photo of it below). Each child chose a good learning spot on the rug. We sit in specific spots to learn, but it is also a very important part of our day because it is where we hold our Morning Meeting. You will hear more about our Morning Meeting over the next few weeks, but for now, know that it is a KEY opportunity for our class to connect with one another and grow into a community of learners.
Making a Tower: Yes, this is a part of community building . . . and was both fun, yet challenging! The task was simple: use 30 paper cups to build the tallest tower possible . . . in 5 minutes. Several towers were built – and fell down, but overall, these first graders got to work in a small group and discover ways to positively work together. Look at some of our towers as well as our reflections.
Singing: We sang a little bit this week too. Below are the lyrics of one of the songs we enjoyed. If you show the lyrics to your first grader, he or she might just break out in song and impress you with some musical talent! Singing together is always so much fun!
A Smile for You! I love to try to make you smile. (That is, if you haven’t already!) Sometimes, I choose silly pictures from the internet, but during this first week of school, I thought I would introduce you to our class pet, Bradford. So, I hope you will smile as you look at the photo below. Enjoy . . . and thanks for reading this entire blog post. 🙂
