We had a very important day this week – Earth Day. On Wednesday of this week, we talked about the importance of celebrating our planet and conserving natural resources. In addition to this work, we learned more about animals, began a new chapter book, continued organizing and representing data during math and danced our hearts out during ACES Day. Thanks for visiting our blog this week!

- Your class read a book called Those Shoes this week. What did the main character do to help another boy in the story? What are some things the author did that you found interesting as a reader?
- When representing data on a chart with sticky notes, what is important to remember to show the data accurately as a mathematiican. Can the notes overlap? Can there be spaces in between the notes? Do the notes need to be in a straight line? How can you tell how many people answered the question altogether?
- Today, you sorted recyclable items that you will use for science next week. Tell me how your class decided to sort these items. Was your class successful?
New Chapter Book: On Monday, we began a new chapter book all about a silly pig named Mercy Watson. Mercy is in a book series that tells all about the adventures of the Watson’s and their pet pig, Mercy. Continue to ask your first grader about the story and what he or she likes best. Plus, if your child really enjoys the book, there are more Mercy Watson books in the series that you could read together!
Earth Day: As I wrote above, we celebrate Earth Day this week. One way we celebrated this day was by discussing our planet and creating a craft to remind us what WE can do to respect our planet. Although Earth Day is only one day out of the year, we talked about how it’s important to respect our planet daily.
Science – Animals: This week, we began learning more about animals by reading animal texts and sharing our facts with webs – both on paper and electronically. After making a paper web about an animal, each first grader used the app, Popplet, to show their work on the iPad. We will begin creating representations of animals habitats and ways to care for them during our science time next week.
ACES Day: Today, was one of the days ALL Robinson kids look forward to for many months. It was ACES Day! Are you wondering what that means? Well, check out my post from last year by clicking here and you’ll find out. Plus, you can see some photos from last year’s event.
A Smile for You: The photo became a favorite early in the day on Earth Day. Alyssa coincidentally wore a shirt with the earth on it for Earth Day. She was very happy about this and we were too! We even used her photo during our Reading Workshop to represent our project for Earth Day! Thanks for reading our post this week. Have a wonderful LONG weekend!
