Adopting a Pilot?

Adopting a Pilot?   What?!?!  That sounds strange to adopt a pilot.  Well . . . believe it or not – we are!  The fifth grade at Robinson has the privilege to “adopt” a pilot from Southwest Airlines for the next few weeks.  Our pilot is Mr. Smith and we got to meet him this past Monday.  We get to learn about many of the ins and outs of flight, track his flights each week, and we even get to Skype with Mr. Smith next week while he is traveling!  It’s a great time so far and will continue until the middle of May.

Here is Pilot Smith teaching us about different kinds of planes. Cool!

We have done some pretty fun learning this week.  Read on to find out what we’ve been up to over the past several days.

Conversation Starters:

  • What did you write poetry about this week?  What were the themes (heartbeat) in your poems?
  • What did you enjoy most about your time with your learning buddy last week?
  • When the pilot came to talk to you on Monday, what surprised you about his talk?

Learning Buddies: Last Friday, we met with our Learning Buddies to celebrate Earth Day (that was earlier in the week).  We did an outdoor activity and then spent time together in the classroom doing various activities created by our fifth graders for the second graders.  As always, it was a fun time together.

Poetry Writing: This week, we have been working on writing poetry with a THEME.  Similar to how stories have themes, poets have themes too.  The theme is the heartbeat of the poem and gives it purpose.    We will continue writing poetry over the coming weeks and are excited to see what comes from these amazing poets!

Geometry: We have finished our formal study of geometry.  One way we practiced our geometry skills was by playing a game together.  It was so silly, but promoted great learning too.  Check out the photos below!

Look at how fun math can be! We played a game, similar to Headbandz, where kids had to ask yes or no questions about the shape on their head and then they had to guess the shape based on the responses to their questions.

Division Scavenger Hunt: We ALSO went outside on Wednesday for a division scavenger hunt.  Who thought math could be so fun?!?!  We LOVE playing outside and had a great time solving the math problems (in the photo below) with our partners.  Look at the photos to see us in action!
