Los Ultimos Dias de Enero

ani-sunLos Ultimos Dias de Enero = The Final Days of January

What has happened to January?!?  It has gone by so quickly.  I guess that’s what happens when we have winter break, snow days, and a holiday.  At least we continue to work hard and keep chugging along on our learning journey!  Check out what we’ve been up to below.

  • Conversation Starters
  • Squzzle Wall of Fame
  • Writing Research Reports
  • Identifying Important Ideas
  • 2 Upcoming Events
  • A Smile for You!

Conversation Starters:

  • How is your work going on the Squzzles?  Do you like the challenge of doing something difficult?  Why or why not?
  • Your class is still reading the chapter book, The Unwanteds.  What are some of the important ideas you have identified as you have heard this book and why are these ideas important to remember?
  • Tell me about the research you are doing during your Writing Workshop.  What are the questions you are trying to answer as you research?

Squzzle Wall of Fame:  Yes, the Squzzles are difficult!  But, I must say that the children are truly enjoying the opportunity to challenge their brains and attempt to complete the puzzles.  We even included the puzzles into our math rotations earlier this week because puzzles utilize problem solving skills, just like math.  Check out some of our Squzzle finishers, as well as our Squzzle Wall of Fame photo below.  As you can see, the number of fifth graders who have completed a Squzzle continues to increase.

Malakai was among one of the first to complete a Squzzle.

Writing Research Reports: After completing a research report on Ancient West Africa, it was time to begin researching something new.  Each fifth grader chose a topic in science to research and has been working hard this week on learning as much as possible about their topic.  The topics we are researching are in the photo below.  Give us a little bit of  time and you will eventually see an invitation come home inviting you to our Writing Celebration.  Until then, keep encouraging your fifth grader author to learn ANYTHING and EVERYTHING about his or her research topic.

Identifying Important Ideas: During our Reading Workshop, one of the areas that we have focused recently is learning how to identify important ideas in texts.  The key text we have practiced with has been our chapter book, The Unwanteds.  It’s amazing how much we can learn from any text we read!  Plus, we can have fun while we read too . . . what a great combination.  Check out the prompt we are using as we identify important ideas in our reading.

We use this prompt often as we identify important ideas in a text.

2 Upcoming Events!I wanted to let you know about two upcoming events that you might be interested in.  One is a Parent Night at Nipher and the other is a speaking event at the high school about  acceptance, courage, kindness, and tolerance.  I think you’ll enjoy both events!  Check out the information below.

A Smile for You! As you know from previous posts, I believe it’s important to smile OFTEN to remind ourselves not to take things too seriously.  So, here’s a photo that I hope will make you smile because of its beauty, like it did for me.  Have a great rest of you week and a wonderful weekend!

This was the view from my house on Sunday evening! Sure it's chilly, but it is also incredibly beautiful!
